Suspected pipe bombs have been sent to Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and CNN days after top Democrat donor George Soros was also sent a similar device.

The Time Warner Center in New York, which is home to CNN, was evacuated after a device with a pipe and wires was discovered addressed to former CIA director John Brennan.

New York City's police commissioner said a package sent to TV news channel CNN contained a live explosive and an envelope containing white powder which is now being tested.

The device was safely removed from the Time Warner building using a total containment vessel - known as a 'bomb truck'.

New York Police had issued a warning to people near the building urging them to 'shelter in place' as bomb teams dealt with the device as sniffer dogs were seen going into the underground car park.

CNN released an image of the device beside the stamped manila envelope, which was delivered by a messenger. Former CIA Director John Brennan's name is misspelled on the front of the envelope.

The Clinton device is reportedly similar to a bomb with explosive powder which was placed in the mailbox at the home of billionaire George Soros, also in New York state, earlier this week.

A suspicious item, claimed to resemble a pipe bomb, was found near the home of ex-President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary in Chappaqua, in upstate New York this morning.

Late last night a device was intercepted in Washington DC addressed to ex-President Barack Obama, says the Secret Service.

The Clinton device was reportedly identified during a routine screening at a nearby facility.

Hillary Clinton addressed the incident during her speech in Florida saying: "We are fine thanks to the men and women of the Secret Service who intercepted the package addressed to us long before it made its way to our home. Everyday we are grateful to their service"

Bill Clinton tweeted: "Thank you to the Secret Service and all law enforcement agencies who responded to this week's incidents. They work tirelessly to keep our country and communities safe. I am forever grateful for their efforts."

Federal police are investigating the discoveries alongside the Secret Service.

Officials have said at least three of the parcels - the ones sent to Obama, Clinton and Soros - were all packaged inside manila envelopes and had stamps on them.

A suspicious package addressed to the congresswoman was intercepted by Capitol Hill police.

Waters said in a statement: "I have been informed by U.S. Capitol Police that my Washington, DC office was the target of a suspicious package that has been referred to the FBI.

"I am appreciative of the law enforcement entities who intercepted the package and are investigating this matter. I unequivocally condemn any and all acts of violence and terror."

Sources told NBC New York that devices are appear to be "working explosives".

Officials have said all four "potential explosive devices" are thought to be linked.

Police were also investigating a suspicious package sent to the Sunrise officers of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, reports claimed.

Officials have also told NBC that authorities have intercepted a suspicious package sent to former Attorney General Eric Holder. The package had the wrong address and so was sent to the return address which was the office of Wasserman-Schultz.

The signature on all three is said to be the same and at least two had a return address to Debbie Wasserman Schultz, according to reports.

There is no suggestion Wasserman Schultz sent the packages and a suspicious package sent to her office in Florida is being investigated.

The offices of Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris were also evacuated after suspicious packages had been sent there.

A spokesperson for Harris, Lily Adams, said: "Our office was evacuated today after suspicious packages were found near the building. The packages were not addressed to the Senator or our office. We are grateful to the San Diego Police Department for their work to swiftly investigate this issue."

ABC has also reported a suspicious package addressed to Democratic California congresswoman Maxine Waters was intercepted by Capitol Hill police.

Speaking about the bomb scare, Donald Trump said "the full weight of our government" are investigating the packages and will "bring those responsible for these despicable acts to justice".

He also called for unity adding: "I just want to tell you that in these times we have to unify, we have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America."

He added: "The safety of the American people is my highest and absolute priority."

During a conference about the suspicious devices, NY governor Andrew Cuomo announced: "A device has been sent to my office in Manhattan, which we were just informed about...it's being handled as we speak."

He added: "The number of devices and a pattern, we wouldn't be at all surprised if more devices show up."

However, the letter sent to Cuomo's office is believed to be a hoax and not connected to the other devices.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference that the device found at the CNN building is "clearly is an act of terror."

“What we saw here today was an effort to terrorize. This clearly is an act of terror attempting to undermine our free press and leaders of this country through acts of violence," he said.

The San Diego Police Department has also closed a street outside the Union Tribune newspaper and the entire building has been evacuated.

Firefighters investigated a report of suspicious packages near the building, ABC 10 News reports.

This was later found to be a false alarm.

A number of police vehicles have also been seen arriving at the home of former Vice President Joe Biden.

A senior White House official said President Trump was briefed on the suspicious packages intercepted by the Secret Service.

Press Secretary Sarah Sanders later said in a statement: “These terrorising acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

“The United States Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies are investigating and will take all appropriate actions to protect anyone threatened by these cowards.”

A spokeswoman for First Lady Melania Trump said: “Mrs. Trump condemns all forms of threats and violence, and thanks law enforcement for their heroic efforts.”

Ivanka Trump tweeted: "I strongly condemn the attempted acts of violence against President Obama, the Clinton family, CNN & others. There is no excuse—America is better than this. Gratitude to the Secret Service and law enforcement for all they do to keep this nation safe."

A statement from the US Secret Service said: “The US Secret Service has intercepted two suspicious packages addressed to Secret Service protectees.

"Late on October 23, 2018, the Secret Service recovered a single package addressed to Former First Lady Hillary Clinton in Westchester County, New York.

"Early this morning, October 24, 2018, a second package addressed to Former President Barack Obama was intercepted by Secret Service personnel in Washington, DC

"The packages were immediately identified during routine mail screening procedures as potential explosive devices and were appropriately handled as such.

A third suspicious package was also reportedly sent to the White House but this has been disputed

"The protectees did not receive the packages nor were they at risk of receiving them

"The Secret Service has initiated a full scope criminal investigation that will leverage all available federal, state, and local resources to determine the source of the packages and identify those responsible.”

In Soros' case, an employee noticed the package, put it in a wooded area and called police, who alerted the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms and Explosives.

That device was constructed from a length of pipe about six inches long filled with explosive powder, and it was “proactively detonated” by bomb squad technicians, according to one of the officials, who spoke to the New York Times.

Soros, a billionaire who made his fortune in hedge funds, has donated heavily to liberal causes and is vilified on the right and is also the subject of several conspiracy theories, some even promoted by President Donald Trump.

He lives less than 10 miles from the Clinton's in Westchester County.

Soros' foundation, The Open Society Foundation, released a statement Tuesday condemning "the politics of hate that dominates our discourse today."

"In this climate of fear, falsehoods, and rising authoritarianism, just voicing your views can draw death threats," the statement continued.

"George Soros deplores violence of any kind, and urges politicians across the political spectrum to tone down their rhetoric. Words have consequences, and we bear a collective responsibility to create a more civil way to discuss our political differences.

"Respect for a diversity of opinions is fundamental to open society and that is the work that George Soros has devoted his life to. Our politics should be more about what we’re for than who we hate."
